What does the world of a noble S.T. Dupont cigar-smoker look like?
What makes the charm so special and why are accessories such as humidors, lighters, cigar cutters and elegant ashtrays so important?
For millennia tobacco is already smoked in pipes. The worldwide spread of the cigar goes back to the colonial era. Christopher Columbus is said to have been the first European to do so in the 15th / 16th century. Century in Cuba came into contact with tobacco. In the 18th century, British sailors and soldiers brought Cuban cigars to the North American colonial areas, where cigars were soon being produced on newly established plantations.
During the 19th century cigar smoking was very common in Europe and the production of cigars became an important industry
Today the tobacco for cigars is grown mainly in Central America, South America and the Caribbean. Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Honduras, Nicaragua and Brazil are especially famous for their cigars.
Everyone has this picture in mind. The cigar smoker in a posh bar in a hotel or in a cigar lounge near a huge humidor room.
Often these are seen with classic cigars from Cuba and at least half of these cigar connoisseurs have a lighter from S.T. Dupont lying next to him. Mostly in a nice case and a matching cigar cutter.
Why are lighters and accessories from S.T. Dupont so popular?
In 1872, Simon Tissot Dupont founds a luxury leather factory in Paris, whose creations immediately catch on in the highrise.
In the twenties, queens and kings were as enraptured by the beautiful, richly decorated travel etiquettes as politicians or artists.
For the production of these masterpieces of extremely precious and rare materials, 17 different craft professions are needed: crystal glass, leather processors, goldsmiths, paint master etc.
Until the Second World War, S.T.Dupont supplies all the big names in the world. But in 1939, given the decline in demand and the scarcity of precious materials, the house is forced to switch production.
The result is an aluminum lighter.
On 06. January 1941 the patent is filed. Despite the dramatic circumstances of the war, the product is enthusiastically received and after the war, the emergency solution becomes the company’s main product.
The fifties, the epoch of reconstruction. After years of deprivation, people long for a healthy world and for luxury.
S.T.Dupont uses the latest technical advances and announces on 18 July 1952 the patent for a gas lighter.
The simple and timeless form of precision – down to the smallest detail.
It is composed of more than 40 individual parts and consists of a massive brass core, decorated with a light, clearly drawn guilloche. Then gilded or silvered or covered with real Chinese lacquer. In the same year, the production of Reise Necessaires is discontinued.
The sixties: In the high-spirited time of the boom, the company S.T.Dupont also celebrates triumphs. Your lighter fits wonderfully into the epoch of consumerism, it becomes a cult object, a status symbol that reflects social success.
The perfect rectangle becomes a myth. In the seventies and eighties, the heyday of the consumer society, it is more than ever the appearance, the performance. In 1977 S.T.Dupont launches a new lighter that is in perfect harmony with this social and economic reality: the “Ligne 2”. The special feature of this slimmer, more confident model: when you open the cap, it creates a distinctive sound. This peculiar, bright “tone of sound” becomes the hallmark of a social elite, especially in Asia. Thus, S.T.Dontont perfects the aesthetics of his product through acoustic perfection.
In the eighties, women want men in no way inferior, and so does symbols. In 1985 S.T.Dupont presents a miniature version of his lighter. The compact, lightweight “Ligne D” becomes the “constant companion” of the modern woman, especially the “career woman” often quoted in these years.
With the GATSBY, S.T.Dupont continues this trend towards miniaturization in 1989. On the small, rounded Rechtecker appears for the first time the logo of the house. In the future, this combination of harmony and classic rigor will embody the brand and honor all the creations of the S.T.Dupont company.
In the nineties, design becomes a decisive cultural expression – it embodies and communicates values and patterns of behavior. In 1999 S.T.Dupont presents a modern version of the ancient hammock lighter, which was one of the first travel sewing sets.
With the URBAN model, S.T.Dupont produces the synthesis of luxury and industrial design.
2001. Sixty years later, the S.T.Dontont lighter remains a mythical monolith of modern aesthetics.
Impressive lines and bold design – S.T.Dontont is everlasting and always highly topical.
Clearly every cigar smoker appreciates quality and style. S.T.Dupont has understood from the beginning to deliver this quality and the luxury it brings.
So has S.T. Dupont enforced as the No. 1 mark.
